Beauty Blogger Headquarters - December Blog Task: Photography - Starting Small

This is the second task presented by the Beauty Blogger Headquarters group that I am participating in.  You can check out Krystal's BBHQ blog HERE and Beauty By Krystal, her personal site, HERE.

December's topic is PHOTOGRAPHY!

We were given a few questions to think about, including the following:

  • What camera(s) do you use for your blog photography?
  • What type of lighting do you use? Natural light, indoor light, studio lamps, etc.?
  • Do you use a lightbox (purchased or diy?)?
  • Do you use a specific background?
  • What does your photographing setup usually looki like?
  • What is your top photographing tip for a beginner blogger?
  • For fun: If you could upgrade your photographing equipment today, what would you buy

I was a little ashamed when thinking about this month's answer.  Let me start by saying that I plan to upgrade soon!  I had a fabulous Sony DSLR but something is wrong with it, so I have bid it adieu for now.

My photography tool of choice (and necessity) is currently my cellphone. Womp, womp!  It is a Samsung Galaxy S3 with a pretty good macro setting for a phone, I must say.

I also have the advantage of basically year-round sunshine.  Yay, Texas!

Here is China Glaze, Escaping Reality, taken outside with no flash.

I don't use a lightbox at the moment, either.

To be honest, I prefer to take my shots outside in bright and natural sunlight.  I think most colors look best outside in their truest and rawest forms.  I don't have my hands in a lightbox all day, I have them outside in the real world - meeting friends, handing back papers, and doing every day things.  The colors have to look as good outside as they do inside.

Another bonus of taking shots outside is that my dogs often join me on the patio and occasionally, I manage to capture one of their photo-disliking, uber-stubborn selves on camera.

Below is China Glaze Man Hunter with Griswold Family Christmas, by Flash Your Tips and my fuzzy best buddy, my Shelby girl:

On this blog, My Boyfriend Hates Makeup, you'll see a heavy emphasis on pictures taken outside.

You'll see the lovely (ugly) orange paint job that someone (obviously clinically blind) decided would look good on the apartment complex.  So, you can say, my apartment complex and patio are my backgrounds of choice.

There is a light white railing where the sun hits and also an ugly chocolate brown interior patio wall that does a great job contrasting and showcasing neons and brighter colors.

This is China Glaze Man Hunter by itself:

If I could see more of something in the blogging world, it would be pics outside as well as in light boxes.  I am sure I'll change my mind when I get a lightbox! Haha.

Here is China Glaze It's A Trap-Eze. I didn't intend for this to be so CG heavy, but I am partial to the brand, so I am not surprised!
It has been interesting to think about what I would want to get, if I could.  I'd prefer my DLSR to be repaired, so I think when the New Year arrives, I'll work on getting a better set up.

I also wasn't expecting such an awesome response to My Boyfriend Hates Makeup - you all have been a pleasant surprise, to say the least!  I am almost 200 posts in and 15,000 page views.  To many other bloggers that may not seem like much, but I am so grateful and excited for what's to come.

Thanks to Krystal for another fun blogging task!  Be back in January with another installment from Beauty Blogger Headquarters!

  1. Your phone takes fabulous pictures! I have been contemplating on getting the Samsung Galaxy phone too but likely after christmas cause I've been spending left and right.

    1. Thanks, Pang! I take dozens before I pick the few that I publish but I think everyone does that, regardless of camera :)
